The history of Berteil

A great adventure since 1840

Since 1840, ... at least!

The history of Berteil has retained its share of mystery, as it is not known exactly when the company was founded. We do know, however, that Berteil existed in 1840, since at that time a young, soon-to-be-famous Italian was being trained there as an apprentice hatmaker: Giuseppe Borsalino.

Founded by Alfred Berteil, the company specialised in the manufacture of hats, which were worn by all the courts of Europe, the gotha, the political world and high society. From top hats to caps and bowler hats, all styles were possible, as long as they were elegant.

Since then, the company has been handed down from generation to generation, and remains in the same family until 2016.

In the 1970s, the hat business declined. Michel Houyvet, a descendant of Alfred Berteil, bought out the shares of his brothers and sisters and joined forces with his childhood friend Gérard Kiener. Together, they gave a new impulse to the brand by deciding to launch a collection of clothes for every day, (and for the slightly more exceptional days), in a style mixing French tradition with English and Italian touches. The values remain unchanged: no concessions on materials, no concessions on manufacturing, lots of colour, timelessness rather than ephemeral fashion, the right price for quality.

This daring gamble has been a success. Berteil attracted a very good clientele and the brand reached a new peak in the 1980s.

Several addresses followed one another from the rue du Temple to the boulevard Saint-Germain, via Saint-Michel and Clément Marot and of course the place Saint-Augustin for more than 120 years. The head office is now located at 6 boulevard Malesherbes.

In 2016, the House changed hands, and under the impetus of Vianney Houette, a group of passionate shareholders took up the torch with the aim of maintaining the spirit of this beautiful house and giving it a new impetus.

The men's line, whether casual, business or evening wear, obviously adapts to the tastes and uses of the moment, but with the aim of seeing each garment accompany you for a long time, like a comforting reference point through which you always feel beautiful, always well, year after year... So much so that it is not uncommon to see them live a second life on the backs of our customers' grandchildren, which we are delighted about!


The team

At Berteil we prefer to dress customers than just sell them items!

With many years of experience, a strong culture of service, and above all, a passion for their profession, the sales staff take the time to advise, and to adjust all the details for a result as perfect as possible.

Antoine, Antonio, Franck, Guy, Laurent, Olivier and Philippe are at your service to help you make your choice. Alain, our workshop manager, ensures that the necessary alterations and alterations are carried out correctly, assisted by Memet, an accomplished alterationist.

In each of our shops, the team is organised around a shop manager. These are Laurent on boulevard Malesherbes and Philippe on rue de Solférino.

Isabelle makes sure that all the products are well listed and informed in every detail. She is the link between the sales and management departments.

Saïd, with his legendary smile, adjusts and repairs, dispatches and receives, all in good humour.

Xavier manages the accounts and administration with rigour and authority.

Catherine, the collection director, is inspired by trends, history, customer expectations and her intuition to design and implement exclusive collections twice a year.

General management is provided by Vianney Houette.
